This is a very new project in 2016, just getting off the ground. Our plan is to grow large quantities of the most popular culinary herbs (parsley, basil, oregano) as well as smaller quantities of the less used like sage or french thyme. In addition we grow some traditional medicinal herbs like comfrey and lemon balm. All herbs are organically grown without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
The garden is purposely outside the enclosed plot holders area. We want passersby to come and enjoy the herbs and encourage them to take cuttings home. Fresh herbs can be expensive and sometimes difficult to find. Need some oregano for a pizza, thyme for your oven-roasted potatoes, or some delicious basil for that mozzarella panini? Come and take what you need.
Herbs currently available are:
- garden mint
- lemon balm
- french thyme
- basil “Genovese”
- basil “Sandwich leaf”.
We have built a signboard which will provide cooking tips and interesting information about our herbs. This will be available very soon. Meanwhile, this is what the garden looks like on 20 April 2016.
